Position Summary Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) / Medical Technologist (MT) to join our Laboratory team. This position performs technical analytical procedures requiring knowledge and expertise in hematology, chemistry, special chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, serology, urinalysis, coagulation, and phlebotomy. The MLS/MT performs routine and specialized laboratory testing, evaluates quality control, performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, and collaborates with providers and healthcare teams to support accurate diagnosis and treatment. The position also has authority to manually enter results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). The ideal candidate is a strong laboratory generalist who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to quality, accuracy, and exceptional patient care. Schedule Highlights Full-time position (40 hours/week) Monday: 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday: 6:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Four-day workweek Three-day weekends Cross-trained in phlebotomy and specimen collection responsibilities Key Responsibilities Laboratory Testing Perform laboratory testing in: Hematology Chemistry Special Chemistry Microbiology Blood Bank Serology Urinalysis Coagulation Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing according to established procedures Evaluate, analyze, verify, and release patient test results Confirm abnormal results and report critical values according to policy Respond promptly to STAT testing requests Perform testing for patients across all age groups, from neonates through geriatrics Quality & Compliance Perform and document quality control testing Participate in proficiency testing and competency programs Complete corrective actions when quality issues arise Maintain compliance with CLIA, COLA, laboratory, and organizational standards Support laboratory quality improvement initiatives Instrumentation & Troubleshooting Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment Troubleshoot instrumentation and procedural issues Assist in resolving equipment problems and maintaining operational readiness Monitor reagent and supply inventories and notify leadership of shortages Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection using proper collection techniques Verify orders and collect appropriate specimen types Ensure proper labeling, accessioning, and specimen transport Educate patients regarding specimen collection procedures Maintain specimen integrity and quality standards Laboratory Operations Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for resulting, ordering, editing, and managing tests Process reference laboratory testing requests Assist with training and orientation of new laboratory employees Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment Support departmental inventory and supply management activities Qualifications Education Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in Laboratory Sciences required Completion of an approved Medical Technology internship required Experience Minimum five (5) years of experience as a clinical Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist required Generalist laboratory experience strongly preferred Large hospital laboratory experience preferred but not required Certifications One of the following certifications is required: Medical Technologist (MT) – ASCP or AMT MLT (ASCLS), MT (ASCLS), or equivalent certification Candidates eligible for certification may be considered if they are able to obtain certification within two (2) years of hire. Additional requirements: Current AHA BLS certification for Healthcare Providers Ability to distinguish colors accurately Skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and testing methodologies Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality Ability to prioritize workload and respond to urgent testing needs Excellent communication and teamwork skills Proficiency with: Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Electronic Health Records Microsoft Office applications Why Join PSMC's Laboratory Team? "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader. Starting Work Bonus: This position is eligible for a starting work bonus of up to $5,000. Eligibility, amount, and payment terms are subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s compensation policies and may vary based on position, experience, and employment status. Bonus payments, if applicable, are typically issued after the employee has met required employment and service criteria. Moving Expense Reimbursement: This position is eligible for a moving expense reimbursement of up to $3,000. Reimbursement is subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s relocation policy and requires prior approval. Eligible expenses and reimbursement amounts may vary based on position and individual circumstances. Reimbursement is processed in accordance with established policy and applicable tax regulations.
