About this role
Mandera’s is a small, independent boutique guesthouse in the heart of Valletta — private suites, dorm beds, and a handful of nearby residential and office properties that we look after ourselves. We run at around 94% occupancy year-round, and we’ve been called “possibly the best hostel in the world” by guests — a reputation we work hard, every day, to live up to.
We’re hiring a Housekeeper & Operations Assistant to help us keep doing exactly that.
You’d cover housekeeping across:
• Our hostel in Valletta (private rooms, dorms, shared bathrooms, common areas)
• A 3-bedroom apartment
• Our offices
• An apartment in Luqa
• Plus ad-hoc cleaning across the portfolio
You won’t be on your own. You’ll work day-to-day alongside our Operations Coordinator, who runs the schedule, shows you the ropes at every property, and is your first port of call when something comes up. We invest properly in onboarding and training — clear plan for your first weeks, hands-on shadowing at each site, and checklists so you can hit your stride fast.
To make moving between sites easy, we provide a company scooter (fuel and insurance covered) — you bring a valid driving license accepted in Malta. We also give you a company SIM on a contract with unlimited calls and data, so you’re reachable without spending a cent of your own.
One week each month you’ll be on the on-call rota for after-hours guest emergencies. We’ve kept it light — typically just one or two calls in that whole week — and we pay a separate allowance on top of your salary for being available.
What you’ll do• Clean & maintain our properties — daily turn-downs and post-checkout cleans at the hostel, plus regular cleans of the 3-bedroom apartment, the offices, and the Luqa apartment
• Laundry & linen change — wash, dry, fold and rotate sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, bath and hand towels, and bath mats; keep rooms always guest-ready
• Greet guests at the hostel — meet and greet arrivals, hand over keys, run check-ins/check-outs, and answer simple questions when you’re on site
• Basic maintenance & supply runs — light fixes (bulbs, unblocking drains, touch-ups), reporting anything bigger to the manager, plus supply runs to Lidl, Spar etc.
• On-call duty (1 week / month) — be reachable on the company SIM for emergency guest situations during your scheduled on-call week; expect 1–2 calls in that week
• Get between properties on our company scooter
• A driving license valid in Malta for a scooter / motorcycle — international or local
• Authorised to work in Malta, OR already living in Malta and eligible for a Single Permit — we sponsor the application for non-EU candidates already on the island (same path several of our team have taken)
• Conversational English (A2 / B1 or above) — enough for guest greetings and key handovers; Maltese is a plus
• Detail-oriented and reliable — you take pride in a properly made bed and a spotless bathroom
• Comfortable working independently across multiple sites and managing your own day
• Physically able to handle a full housekeeping shift (lifting linen bags, stairs, bending, standing for long stretches)
• Trustworthy with property keys and access — you’ll often be the only person in these spaces
• Friendly, calm and discreet with guests, especially during check-ins and on-call call-outs
• Prior housekeeping, hostel, hotel or domestic-cleaning experience is welcome but not essential — we train
• €14,000 gross annual salary, paid monthly
• €1,000 gross annual on-call allowance, paid on top of base salary for being reachable one week per month (expect 1–2 calls per week)
• Performance bonuses tied to guest review scores and cleanliness standards — your work directly affects our ratings, and we share the upside
• Company scooter for travel between properties, with fuel and insurance covered
• Company SIM card on a contract with unlimited calls and data — you’re reachable on us, never on your own dime
• 4-day work week — 4 days × 10 hours = 40 hours per week, on a rotating schedule
• Statutory bonuses, public holidays and vacation leave in line with Maltese law
• Indefinite contract after a 6-month probation period
• Single Permit sponsorship for non-EU candidates already in Malta
• Structured onboarding & training — clear first-weeks plan, hands-on shadowing at every property, checklists you can lean on; we set you up to succeed
• Day-to-day partnership with our Operations Coordinator — you have a real teammate, not just a manager-at-a-distance
• A small, friendly team where your work directly shapes guest experience at one of the most-loved hostels around
