We support peace and prosperity by building connections, understanding and trust between people in the UK and countries worldwide. For 90 years we have shaped brighter futures through education, arts, culture, language, and creativity. Working with people in over 200 countries and territories, we are on the ground in more than 100 countries. We connect. We inspire. What's it like to work at the British Council as a Teacher? Teacher's Success Story Role Overview /Purpose: The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. Our mission is to create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries by making a positive contribution wherever we work. We do this by changing lives through opportunities, building connections and engendering trust. Active in over 100 countries worldwide, we work across the fields of Arts and Culture, English, and Youth and Society, reaching more than 20 million people face-to-face and over 500 million people online each year. Founded in 1934, the British Council is a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and operates as a UK public body. In Vietnam, the British Council delivers substantial public-access English teaching through British Council Vietnam LLC, alongside a broad range of activities in Arts and Culture, Youth and Society, and English language development, including teacher training in support of the national education system. Our English teaching operation has a strong and growing focus on young learners. Across Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the majority of our teaching centres are dedicated to young learner education. In Ho Chi Minh City, four of the five existing centres focus on young learners, with two new centres planned that will also teach children aged 5 to 17. In Hanoi, three of the four existing centres are dedicated to young learner teaching. All young learner centres deliver courses for children and teenagers aged between 5 or 6 and 17, offering the full suite of British Council proprietary courses, although Early Years provision is not available in every location. For our youngest learners, we offer Learning Time with Timmy, an engaging Early Years programme developed in partnership with Aardman. This programme is designed to build early literacy and vocabulary while boosting confidence and making learning enjoyable. Early Years teaching currently represents a smaller part of our overall activity, but it is expected to grow. Primary Plus is our programme for children aged 6 to 11, while Secondary Plus serves learners aged 12 to 17 through a dynamic, task-based approach. Courses for upper secondary learners place greater emphasis on English for academic purposes and IELTS preparation. Teaching schedules are aligned with young learner provision and typically take place in the evenings and at weekends. Schedules include two consecutive days off each week, and our policy is to minimise or, where possible, avoid split shifts. Teaching allocations take into account training and development needs, as well as individual experience and areas of professional specialism. Our centres provide high-quality teaching environments, with classrooms maintained and equipped to a high standard and supported by up-to-date technology to enhance teaching and learning. Teachers have access to extensive academic resources, as well as well-equipped preparation areas and staff rooms. Examinations-related activity, particularly IELTS, has grown rapidly in Vietnam, and there may be opportunities for teachers to become involved in examining, subject to scheduling and examiner status requirements. In addition, the British Council in Vietnam works closely with the Department of Education and Training and other government partners on a range of projects, while also supporting primary and secondary school teachers through professional development and training programmes within the state education system. The purpose of this role is to assure effective teaching and learning of English while supporting the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission. This is an opportunity to contribute to a globally respected organisation, make a meaningful impact on young learners’ lives, and develop your teaching career in a supportive and professional environment.
