Fireweed Mental Health Charge - Regular Full-Time

Regular Full-Time Position - (1.0 FTE) This position has an hourly pay range of $54.39 - $72.65 (PIPSC Bargaining Unit) Reporting to the Clinical Care Manager (CCM), the Mental Health Charge plays a pivotal leadership role in coordinating and overseeing the delivery of safe, high-quality mental health nursing care within the Psychiatric Stabilization Program. Serving patients from across the Yukon, the unit provides culturally grounded, trauma-informed care to voluntary and involuntary patients requiring short-term stabilization and safe transition back to the community. As both a clinical and operational leader, the Mental Health Charge supports frontline staff, oversees daily unit operations, manages patient flow and transitions, and ensures care is delivered in alignment with professional standards, legislative requirements (including the Mental Health Act and Care and Consent Act), organizational policies, and safety protocols. Serves as a clinical resource for complex mental health presentations, comprehensive risk assessments, support during periods of acute mental health needs and interdisciplinary coordination. Core responsibilities include coordinating patient assignments; supporting the therapeutic milieu and programming; overseeing admissions and discharges; liaising with interdisciplinary teams and external partners; mentoring and supporting staff; contributing to staffing and scheduling decisions; and ensuring a safe, therapeutic, and culturally respectful environment. The Charge also provides direct patient care as required, responding effectively to fluctuations in patient acuity and unit demands. This role requires strong leadership, advanced mental health clinical judgment, effective communication, and the capacity to lead effectively and make timely, informed decisions in high-risk, dynamic, and rapidly changing environments. Ability to remain composed in high-risk, emotionally complex, and rapidly changing environments. The Mental Health Charge plays a critical role in shaping unit culture, supporting staff wellbeing, and advancing evidence-informed and culturally safe mental health care in the Yukon. Knowledge, skills and abilities required: * Comprehensive knowledge of mental health and addictions nursing theory, evidence-based practice; * Ability to apply trauma-informed, recovery-oriented principles to leadership, clinical decision-making, and patient care in high-risk mental health environments; * Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, Care and Consent Act, and ethical decision-making in mental health settings; * Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to mentor, support, and guide staff in complex and high-risk clinical environments; * Advanced assessment, crisis intervention, and de-escalation skills; * Knowledge of interdisciplinary roles and ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, allied health professionals, First Nations Health Programs, and community partners; * Strong understanding of patient flow, discharge planning, and continuity of care within mental health systems; * Ability to recognize and mitigate the impacts of trauma, including vicarious trauma, and support staff through reflective practice, debriefing, and psychologically safe leadership; * Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills; * Ability to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed care and engage respectfully with patients, families, and communities from diverse backgrounds, including Yukon First Nations; * Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and dynamic operational demands; * Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to use electronic health records and clinical documentation systems. The successful applicant will hold a Diploma or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, maintain current registration with the Yukon Registered Nurses Association, and possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Workplace Violence Prevention training. A minimum of three (3) years of recent clinical experience in mental health or addictions nursing, preferably within an acute or inpatient setting. Cultural Safety and Trauma-Informed Care Training, Indigenous Cultural Safety or First Nations health education, Suicide Risk Assessment and Intervention training, experience with Meditech or other electronic heath record systems are desired. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.
