Location: Loughton, Essex Department Overview The Bank’s Property Department, through its Infrastructure Engineering team, maintains and enhances our workplace environment—helping to provide safe, reliable and high-performing buildings for colleagues, while supporting the Bank’s critical operations. Apprentice Technician As an Apprentice Technician, you will join an established engineering team responsible for the operation and maintenance of essential and non-essential building systems. You will develop practical mechanical and/or electrical skills while working towards a recognised qualification. Key activities include: * Attend an external apprenticeship training provider two days per week. * Help maintain, improve and repair mechanical and electrical systems and assets. * Work with supervisors to carry out fault-finding across engineering systems and assets. * Complete surveys and investigations under supervision. * Complete quarterly training reports. * Deliver quarterly technical presentations on agreed topics. * Complete health and safety training to IOSH Operating Safely standard. * Maintain continuity of work and information between colleagues (e.g., clear handovers and updates). * Attend original equipment manufacturer (OEM) training as scheduled. * Work towards completion of a Level 3 City & Guilds Electrical or Mechanical apprenticeship. Throughout the programme, you will have opportunities to learn alongside experienced technicians across a broad range of plant and systems. The level of hands-on work will increase as your competence and confidence develop. You will be line-managed by a Team Leader and supported day to day by a Senior Technician mentor (depending on your site). The wider engineering team will also help ensure you have the support you need to succeed. Your Team Leader and mentor will help make sure your training supports your development, builds the skills needed for the role and meets national standards. They will also be there to support you through any challenges. The standard working day is 08:00–16:00 (site dependent). You will work a 35-hour week and attend college/training two days per week. Please note: the training provider is based in Dagenham and you will attend the provider site twice a week. In years 1 and 3 of the apprenticeship, you will be based in Debden for three days per week and Dagenham for the remaining two days. In years 2 and 4, you will be based in Threadneedle Street for three days per week, with the remaining two days in Dagenham. Role Requirements Minimum criteria * 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (old grade C) or above, including English, Mathematics and at least one Science. Essential criteria * Motivation to complete an engineering apprenticeship, with an understanding of the commitment needed to balance work, study and training. * Evidence of reliability and personal accountability—for example, strong attendance, completing coursework, part-time work, or other responsibilities. * Experience of working effectively as part of a team, contributing positively and supporting others to achieve shared goals. * Demonstrable ability to work independently, following instructions and managing time effectively. * Ability to solve problems, improve an activity, or move a task forward without constant supervision. * Ability to work with guidance and supervision—following instructions, taking on feedback and applying learning to improve performance. Desirable criteria * Demonstrable interest in engineering/building services (e.g., relevant coursework, a hobby project, work experience or volunteering) and confidence using basic IT tools to record work (e.g., Microsoft Outlook/Excel or similar). Salary and Benefits Information Location: Loughton, Essex Salary: £27,000 In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below: * Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year. The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time. * A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool. * An 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits. * 26 days’ annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits. * Private medical insurance and income protection. The more information you put in the better chance you have of going to the next stage. * Assessment, we invite selected candidates from the first phase (application questions) to Debden for an AM or PM assessment. This consists of an hour-long multiple-choice mathematics paper, a walk around the facility and finally a one-to-one interview with a panel to discuss your CV and about yourself. The whole assessment will last between 2-3 hours. * Second interview, from the assessment if you are successful, you will be invited back for a second interview to give a 10-minute presentation on Building Services and a more in-depth interview. This role closes on Tuesday 5th May 2026 with assessments starting on the 13th & 14th May and final interviews on Wednesday the 20th May 2026.
