About this role

G3 is seeking an Associate Director to join our Strategic Intelligence practice with a focus on Japan. The position is based in our Tokyo office, with at least three to six months of initial training at our headquarters in London.

We are looking for candidates with at least five years of experience in business intelligence, law, finance, consulting, corporate strategy, strategic intelligence, government, or comparable environments.

G3

G3’s Strategic Intelligence practice advises business leaders and investors on the decisions that matter most to their organisations. We work on many of the world’s most significant transactions and corporate movements, advising on M&A, regulatory and policy matters, and senior appointments.

Clients turn to G3 because they need a clearer view of a commercial risk, a regulatory environment, or a senior individual, and because they value the independence and discretion of our work. Our clients include many of the world’s largest corporations, leading private equity funds, and major institutional investors. Many of them have worked with us for years.

The Role

An Associate Director runs G3’s most demanding engagements. In any given month, they might be assessing the commercial risks attached to a target in a multi-billion-pound transaction, mapping the political dynamics that will determine whether a piece of legislation passes, or building a considered view of a senior executive.

Much of our work is done through G3’s network – a global community of contacts cultivated over many years, whose perspective and access make our advice possible. Associate Directors learn to draw on the network and, over time, contribute to it.

How we present our findings is central to what we do, and much of our advice is delivered in writing and on calls with senior clients. We hold ourselves to a high standard, and we expect Associate Directors to be articulate, precise, and confident communicators.

The successful candidate for this role will also be expected to take a leading role in the operational management of the Tokyo office, which includes line and project management.

What we are looking for

We are looking for candidates with at least five years’ experience in law, finance, consulting, corporate strategy, strategic intelligence, government, or comparable environments.

We do not hire for a single profile, and our work benefits from a range of perspectives. Typically, strong candidates:

  • Are investigative by instinct: curious, persistent, and entrepreneurial in finding what they need.
  • Have high emotional intelligence and sound commercial judgement, quick to grasp what a client is really worried about and confident in advising them on it.
  • Have a strong academic background and demonstrable interest in writing and learning.

While professional working proficiency in Japanese and a high level of cultural awareness of Japan are preferable, neither is required.

What comes next

Associate Directors are central to G3. They lead client projects, develop their advisory and client management skills, and, for this role, take on responsibility for a small team of their own, with accountability for the development of junior colleagues.

The people who progress furthest are those who set the standard for those around them, are committed to bringing colleagues along, and care about the team’s growth as much as their own success.

The route from there is to Director, where the role broadens to carry greater strategic responsibility and the long-term stewardship of G3’s practices and client relationships. Some have moved into senior operational and business development roles at the firm.

What we offer

  • Salary – competitive, based on experience;
  • Flexible working – balance of home and office;
  • Family friendly company – including enhanced maternity and paternity pay;
  • Private medical insurance –
  • Life insurance
  • 25 days holiday per year in addition to gazetted public holidays; and
  • Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance will be provided.

If you believe you have the relevant experience, character, and qualifications to be part of the G3 team, please send your CV and a covering letter to [email protected].

Equal Opportunity Statement

We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace and encourage applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of race, gender, disability, or any other characteristic. We conduct rolling interviews to ensure a timely hiring process, so candidates are encouraged to apply early as positions may close once suitable applicants are found.
