Job Title: Xhosa Language Expert – PII Annotation Project (Short-term, 3–4 weeks)

Location: Remote (work during Xhosa local hours between 9:00 AM–9:00 PM SAST)

Type: Short-term contract, 3–4 weeks

Daily Hours: 4–8 hours/day, 5 days/week

Start Date: Immediate / ASAP

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate (please state your expected hourly rate in the application)

About the project

We are running a short-term project to identify and annotate personally identifiable information (PII) in Xhosa-language text/audio. Annotators will review content, label PII categories (names, locations, ID numbers, contact details, dates, etc.), and follow strict data-security and annotation guidelines. This role is vital for improving privacy-aware language models and data safety processes.

Key responsibilities

• Accurately identify and annotate PII elements in Xhosa text and/or transcripted audio according to project guidelines.
• Apply consistent labels and follow examples in the annotation schema.
• Complete daily assigned tasks within agreed timeframes (4–8 hours/day).
• Attend a short onboarding session and optional QA feedback calls.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow data security procedures (NDAs required).
• Communicate progress and issues promptly to the project manager.

Required qualifications

• Fluency in Xhosa (reading and writing & speaking).
• Strong understanding of Xhosa names, locations, cultural references, and variation in spelling/orthography.
• Previous experience with linguistic annotation, data labelling, content moderation, or similar tasks is preferred.
• Reliable internet connection and a quiet workspace for focused work.
• Comfortable working remotely during local hours between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM SAST.
• Ability to commit 3–4 weeks, 5 days per week, 4–8 hours/day.
• Willingness to sign an NDA and follow data security protocols.

Nice-to-have

• Prior experience with PII-related projects or privacy-sensitive annotation.
• Familiarity with annotation tools (e.g., Labelbox, Prodigy, Doccano, custom web-based tools).
• Basic computer skills (Google Sheets, web browsers) and ability to learn new tools quickly.
