The Role
This company is hiring a Vice President of Engineering to lead our engineering organization as we scale from early enterprise deployments to a global financial infrastructure platform.
This role is not only a people management position. We are looking for a hands-on engineering leader who can deeply understand full-stack product development, backend architecture, AI and data pipelines, infrastructure, security, and enterprise delivery.
You will work directly with the CEO, product team, engineering team, and Japanese enterprise clients to ensure that Dwilar can deliver reliable, secure, and scalable products for banks, lenders, rent guarantee companies, real estate platforms, and other financial institutions.
You will be responsible for building a high-performing engineering culture, improving delivery discipline, mentoring engineers, and ensuring that our technical roadmap is executed with quality and speed.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Leadership
- Lead and manage a globally distributed engineering team across backend, frontend, infrastructure, data, and AI engineering.
- Own engineering delivery, sprint planning, prioritization, technical execution, and release management.
- Build a culture of accountability, quality, speed, and clear communication.
- Mentor senior and junior engineers, improve engineering standards, and help the team grow into a world-class organization.
- Work closely with the CEO and product team to translate business priorities into a clear technical roadmap.
- Japanese Client and Stakeholder Communication
- Communicate directly with Japanese clients, partners, and internal stakeholders in Japanese.
- Understand enterprise client requirements and translate them into clear product and engineering specifications.
- Support technical discussions with Japanese financial institutions, rent guarantee companies, real estate companies, and compliance stakeholders.
- Help build trust with Japanese enterprise customers by explaining technical architecture, security controls, data handling, and implementation timelines clearly.
- Product and Platform Development
- Oversee the development of responsive, high-performance web applications using React, Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind.
- Guide the design and scaling of Python and FastAPI microservices with secure, well-documented REST APIs.
- Lead architecture decisions for identity, permissions, KYC, AML, onboarding, and enterprise dashboard workflows.
- Oversee integrations with open banking APIs, credit bureaus, fraud detection providers, and financial data partners.
- Ensure that Dwilar's product can support instant credit assessments, cross-border credit analysis, fraud detection, and compliance workflows.
- Infrastructure and AI Engineering
- Lead the deployment and operation of Dockerized microservices on Kubernetes and GCP environments.
- Architect and optimize serverless and data solutions on GCP, including Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, Firestore, and Cloud Storage.
- Build and oversee reliable ETL and data pipelines supporting credit models, risk scoring, and decision engines.
- Guide the production use of Vertex AI, custom ML pipelines, OCR workflows, RAG techniques, and applied AI systems.
- Ensure strong observability, monitoring, CI/CD, incident response, and security practices.
- Security, Compliance, and Reliability
- Ensure that engineering practices meet the expectations of enterprise financial clients.
- Work with leadership to strengthen data privacy, access control, audit logging, encryption, and secure development practices.
- Support compliance discussions related to GDPR, PSD2, SOC2, ISO27001, and financial data handling.
- Improve reliability, documentation, testing, QA, and release processes for production deployments.
Qualifications
Must-Have
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience in backend, full-stack, or platform engineering.
- 3+ years of engineering leadership experience, such as Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering, Director of Engineering, VPoE, or similar roles.
- Strong hands-on technical understanding of Python, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, REST APIs, and backend architecture.
- Modern frontend understanding with React, Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind.
- Experience designing scalable APIs using OAuth2, OpenID Connect, and secure authentication patterns.
- Strong experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native architecture.
- Deep hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform.
- Practical understanding of AI, ML, data pipelines, and production-grade AI applications.
- Business-level or fluent Japanese communication ability.
- Business-level English communication ability.
- Ability to work in a fast-moving startup environment with high ownership and urgency.
- Preferred
- Experience in FinTech, banking, credit, lending, payments, insurance, or financial services.
- Experience working with Japanese enterprise clients or regulated industries in Japan.
- Familiarity with compliance and data privacy standards such as GDPR, PSD2, SOC2, and ISO27001.
- Experience with fraud detection, risk scoring, credit assessment, KYC, AML, or financial compliance systems.
- Experience scaling an engineering organization from early product stage to enterprise-grade production.
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
