Position : System Administrator – Firewall Administration Location : Berlin, Bonn Hardtberg, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Munich, Rheinbach, Wilhelmshaven Field : Defence Type : Full-time/20% Remote Project / Department Overview The System / Firewall Administrator is responsible for reviewing, implementing, testing, and documenting firewall rule requests within an IT infrastructure environment. The main objective of the role is to enable required network communication for applications in a secure, controlled, and compliant manner, while ensuring that IT security policies and operational standards are not compromised. The position focuses on firewall administration, network security, change implementation, documentation, and coordination with application owners, requestors, and network teams. Responsibilities The System / Firewall Administrator will be responsible for the following tasks: Analyze and process incoming firewall rule requests, for example from ticketing systems. Review technical and functional requirements, including source systems, target systems, ports, protocols, and communication direction. Coordinate with requestors, application owners, and network teams in case of unclear or incomplete requirements. Assess firewall requests from an IT security perspective in line with applicable security policies. Configure and implement firewall rules on central and decentralized firewall systems. Modify existing firewall rule sets while following least-privilege principles. Execute firewall changes in accordance with defined change management processes. Ensure that changes have minimal impact on existing network communication. Perform functional tests to validate implemented firewall rules. Analyze network traffic and firewall logs for troubleshooting and error diagnosis. Support business or technical departments during the validation of network communication. Fully document all implemented firewall rules in ticketing systems or configuration documentation. Maintain firewall rule sets and update network documentation. Ensure that all changes are documented in a traceable manner according to audit and compliance requirements. Regularly review existing firewall rules with regard to necessity and security. Identify and clean up outdated, redundant, or unnecessary firewall rules. Required Qualifications and Certifications Cisco CCNP certification in routing and switching, or a comparable certification in the network security environment. Good understanding of network technologies, firewall concepts, routing, switching, ports, protocols, and network communication flows. Knowledge of IT security principles, especially firewall rule management and least-privilege concepts. Understanding of change management processes in IT infrastructure environments. Ability to work with ticketing systems and technical documentation tools. Required Professional Experience The candidate should have: At least 2 years of professional experience in a network environment , for example as a Network Administrator, System Administrator, or Firewall Administrator. Practical experience with firewall rule implementation, firewall request analysis, and firewall documentation. Experience in analyzing network traffic, firewall logs, and communication issues. Experience in coordinating technical changes with requestors, application owners, and network/security teams. Language Requirements German: C1 level according to CEFR. English: B1 level according to CEFR. Proof of language skills may be provided through a CV, certificate, reference, self-declaration, or equivalent evidence. Native speakers are exempt from providing separate proof for the respective language.
