About the role
The Senior Staff Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of The Sociable Society’s financial records. This position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring proper revenue and expense recognition, preparing journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes.
The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, possesses strong accounting fundamentals, and has experience working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. This individual will partner closely with Finance, Operations, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable teams to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with accounting policies.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
- Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger.
- Review and ensure proper coding and classification of transactions.
- Prepare and post monthly journal entries, accruals, adjustments, and reclassifications.
- Ensure expenses and revenues are recorded in the appropriate accounting periods.
- Review Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet accounts for accuracy and completeness.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies impacting financial reporting.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
Account Reconciliations
- Perform monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts.
- Reconcile bank accounts and investigate outstanding items.
- Reconcile corporate credit card accounts and employee expense transactions.
- Reconcile merchant processors, payment platforms, and cash clearing accounts.
- Reconcile accounts receivable and accounts payable subledgers to the general ledger.
- Maintain supporting schedules and documentation for all reconciliations.
Revenue & Expense Accounting
- Ensure accurate recording of revenue transactions and related adjustments.
- Review revenue recognition and deferred revenue balances as applicable.
- Monitor expense allocations and ensure proper department coding.
- Support commission, bonus, and payroll-related accounting entries.
- Analyze financial activity for unusual trends or variances.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Maintain strong accounting controls and financial procedures.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and efficiencies.
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies.
- Support implementation and documentation of accounting best practices.
Cross-Functional Support
- Partner with Accounts Receivable and Collections teams to ensure accurate cash application.
- Work closely with Finance leadership to support budgeting, forecasting, and reporting initiatives.
- Assist with ad hoc financial analyses and special projects.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Previous experience working for a U.S.-based company.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting principles.
- Experience performing account reconciliations and month-end close activities.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
- CPA designation or CPA candidate.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online
- Experience in agency, marketing, media, technology, or service-based businesses.
- Experience supporting external audits and financial statement preparation.
