Position Summary:
Base Electron is seeking a highly motivated Senior Manager, Renewable Energy Development to lead the end-to-end development of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and renewable energy projects across multiple U.S. markets.
This individual will be responsible for originating, evaluating, developing, and advancing projects from greenfield site identification through commercial operation and asset handoff. The role requires a hands-on developer capable of managing all aspects of project development, including site acquisition, interconnection, permitting, stakeholder engagement, commercial structuring, and coordination with engineering, procurement, construction, and operations teams.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical and commercial acumen with exceptional relationship-building skills and a demonstrated ability to navigate complex development challenges while advancing multiple projects simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Development & Execution
- Lead the development of standalone and hybrid BESS, solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects from greenfield origination through Commercial Operation Date (COD) and asset handoff.
- Develop and execute project development plans, schedules, budgets, risk assessments, and critical path milestones.
- Advance projects through site control, interconnection, permitting, commercialization, financing support, construction readiness, and operational transition.
- Identify and mitigate development risks while maintaining project schedules and commercial objectives.
- Manage project documentation, approvals, reporting, and executive-level project updates.
Site Selection & Land Acquisition
- Identify and evaluate potential project sites using transmission, GIS, market, environmental, and land-use analyses.
- Lead negotiations of land leases, easements, purchase agreements, and other site control instruments.
- Manage landowner relationships and coordinate external real estate advisors, attorneys, and consultants as necessary.
- Conduct site diligence activities to support investment and development decisions.
Interconnection & Grid Strategy
- Lead utility and ISO/RTO interconnection activities across multiple markets.
- Manage queue strategy, application submissions, study reviews, and negotiations related to network upgrades and interconnection agreements.
- Evaluate transmission constraints, capacity opportunities, congestion patterns, and market fundamentals to support project selection and development strategy.
- Collaborate with internal and external technical teams to optimize project designs and maximize commercial value.
Permitting & Regulatory Affairs
- Develop and execute permitting strategies across local, state, and federal jurisdictions.
- Manage environmental, cultural, geotechnical, and other project diligence activities.
- Coordinate consultants and subject matter experts to secure required permits and approvals.
- Monitor regulatory developments and assess impacts on project development opportunities.
Commercial Strategy & Transactions
- Support project commercialization strategies, including power purchase agreements (PPAs), tolling agreements, capacity contracts, and merchant market opportunities.
- Participate in project acquisition, divestiture, joint venture, and partnership evaluations as needed.
- Develop financial models, investment memoranda, project presentations, and executive approval materials.
- Support financing, investment committee reviews, and transaction due diligence efforts.
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
- Serve as the primary development representative for communities, utilities, regulatory agencies, landowners, and other project stakeholders.
- Lead community outreach efforts, public meetings, and stakeholder engagement initiatives.
- Build and maintain positive relationships that facilitate successful project development and long-term operational success.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner closely with engineering, procurement, construction, operations, and asset management teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support EPC, integrator, and major equipment procurement processes.
- Ensure project designs align with development objectives, constructability requirements, operational needs, and long-term asset performance goals.
- Facilitate smooth transition of projects from development into construction and operations.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Energy Management, Finance, Real Estate, Business, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience developing utility-scale energy infrastructure projects, including BESS, solar, wind, transmission, or other large-scale energy assets.
- Demonstrated experience advancing projects through key development milestones, including site control, interconnection, permitting, and commercialization.
- Strong understanding of utility-scale energy markets, transmission systems, and interconnection processes.
- Experience managing external consultants, legal counsel, land agents, engineers, and environmental specialists.
- Strong financial and commercial analysis skills.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, presentation, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel as needed to support project development activities.
- MBA or advanced degree in a related discipline.
- Direct experience developing utility-scale BESS projects.
- Experience working within ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, or other major U.S. energy markets.
- Familiarity with project finance, energy trading, and power market fundamentals.
- Experience supporting project acquisitions, joint ventures, or strategic partnerships.
- Professional certifications related to project management, engineering, or renewable energy development.
