The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for the hands-on administration, support, and improvement of Ocean’s core technology environment across infrastructure, Microsoft platforms, cloud services, virtualisation, networking, and security operations. The role ensures systems remain stable, secure, and supportable while applying a security-first approach to day-to-day administration and technical decisions. This role requires a practical, improvement-focused mindset and the ability to simplify operations through best practice, standardisation, documentation, and automation. It is a hybrid role based in Melbourne, Australia, at Ocean’s Head Office and reports to the Head of IT. Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, Computer/Systems Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Proven experience in a Senior Systems Engineer, Systems Administrator, Infrastructure Engineer, or similar hands-on role, with strong responsibility for production environments. Strong technical experience across Microsoft environments including Azure, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and hybrid identity services. Hands-on experience managing virtualised infrastructure including VMware and Hyper-V, with knowledge of performance, resilience, patching, backup, and lifecycle management. Experience supporting Windows and Linux servers, core infrastructure, networking, switching, firewalls, storage, backups, monitoring, and operational troubleshooting. Demonstrated ability to apply a security-first approach to systems administration, including privileged access management, hardening, patching, vulnerability remediation, secure configuration, and recovery readiness. Experience supporting security technologies such as firewalls, endpoint protection, email security, vulnerability management, logging, monitoring, and backup platforms. Understanding of operational and compliance obligations such as ISO 27001, Essential Eight, change management, documentation, and audit evidence requirements. Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skills, with the ability to work through complex technical issues under pressure. Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and contribute effectively across operational support, project delivery, and continuous improvement activities. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with internal stakeholders, vendors, and service providers. Infrastructure, Platforms, and Connectivity Administer, maintain, and improve Ocean’s core technology environment across servers, storage, Microsoft 365, Azure, hybrid identity, networking, firewalls, remote access, and related infrastructure services. Manage virtualised environments including VMware and Hyper-V, along with Windows and Linux server platforms, to ensure systems remain stable, secure, and supportable. Support network, firewall, and access control technologies where required, including secure remote access, segmentation, connectivity, and related operational troubleshooting. Security and Operational Hardening Apply a security-first approach to administration through privileged access control, hardening, patching, vulnerability remediation, secure configuration, backup integrity, and recovery readiness. Manage and support relevant security technologies including endpoint, identity, email, logging, monitoring, backup, and vulnerability management platforms. Support security incident response, remediation, and compliance activities aligned with organisational obligations such as ISO 27001 and Essential Eight. Operations, Support, and Improvement Monitor infrastructure health, capacity, availability, and alerting, and plan upgrades, maintenance, and lifecycle activities with minimal business disruption. Provide technical escalation and action service desk incidents, requests, and problem tickets across infrastructure, platforms, networking, and security systems. Work closely with internal teams, vendors, and service providers, maintain accurate technical documentation, and contribute to improvements through standardisation, simplification, and automation.
