You'll provide essential support, training, and become a go-to resource for intricate financial inquiries, engaging with internal partners, government agencies and taxpayers. What will you do? Support the Supervisor through continuous program evaluations, managing data inquiries, and performing financial computations for the Tax Accounting Unit Execute and interpret specialized reports, including debit/credit balances and mortgage interest for closed files, to ensure tax roll integrity Collaborate with Assessment Operations and various City business units to facilitate the precise and prompt processing of tax account modifications Manage the yearly clearing and balancing of suspense accounts Coordinate the timely redistribution of balances on inactive accounts following registered subdivision plans in accordance with legislative mandates Evaluate supplementary charges from other units, ensuring all necessary authorizations are secured from the source areas, Taxation, and Corporate Finance Conduct audits and authorize journal vouchers and accounting records developed by the Accounting Assistants Proofread external communications to confirm they are clear, uniform, and factually correct Assess internal financial workflows to pinpoint efficiencies and suggest enhancements for ongoing process optimization. Responsibilities include proposing TACS system updates, validating software changes, and instructing personnel on updated protocols Partner with the Supervisor and the Manager of Tax Revenue and Reporting to clear monthly Receivables Reconciliation discrepancies. Coordinate with Corporate Accounts Receivable to resolve outstanding items and guide staff in formulating general ledger corrections Perform core duties defined for the Accounting Assistant role as required by operational needs Assist Supervisor with specific file reviews, in alignment with the delegation of authority framework Provide technical support to Accounting Assistants Provide training to new staff, and other areas within the City as required Perform complex analyses/calculations for unique situations, such as penalty cancellations or allocation of account balances to subdivided accounts Handle first level escalations from Accounting Assistants Assist Supervisor with month end reviews and reconciliations Provide support to the Supervisor by assisting with identifying resourcing requirements for the year based on previous results and projected timelines/activities Complete documentation of procedures for monthly and year end tasks, and ensure that related procedures and policies are reviewed and updated as required Assist other teams during peak times, performing other duties as required Qualifications : Successful completion of a recognized accounting diploma 3 years of accounting experience, including preparation of reconciliations and analysis of accounts Skills required for success: Critical thinking skills to be able to properly apply analytical and conceptual skills Must have the ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, to be able to explain complex matters to citizens, staff, and senior management Knowledge of Municipal Government Act, Public Sector Accounting Standards, GAAP, City of Edmonton administrative policies and directives, City of Edmonton Bylaws and how they apply to accounting for tax revenues Time Management skills to manage complex tasks under tight deadlines, while being able to shift Proficient knowledge of computer-based financial systems, such as SAP, COBS, M5 and PeopleSoft Advanced skills in using Google Applications (Docs, Sheets) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) is required Demonstrated leadership ability and strong customer focus and contribute as a positive team player in a customer focused service environment Knowledge of accounting, administrative procedures and regulations Interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships across departments and functions Effective communication skills with courteous, positive problem solving Strong attention to detail and focus on ensuring accuracy of work Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( https://bit.ly/4brRrXm ) Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion Applicants may be tested Work Environment: Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52 The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.
