The impact you will have… You will use your depth of experience, innovation and relational skills to craft communications that will shift narratives about young voters of color and advance a more just and equitable California. You’ll do this through your leadership of the narrative and influence department for both Power California 501(c)3 and its sibling 501(c)(4) nonprofit, PowerCA Action. Your narrative and organizational brand strategies will substantively build support for a young people’s agenda and mobilize masses of young people across the state to participate and lead democratic processes through a variety of channels, materials, and media platforms. How you will spend your days… Collaborates closely with supervisor to develop and implement communications strategy plans for both the 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 entities’ electoral and policy campaigns Ensures integration of communications strategies with field, development, policy, and other departments Oversees Digital Strategist’s work on digital channels; ensures consistency of brand and messaging across platforms; identifies strategies to increase follows and engagement Manages development of framing and messaging strategy for electoral policy campaigns and issues, in collaboration with field and policy departments Executes strategies to increase and maintain our visibility; positions Power California and PowerCA Action as the go-to resources on young voter engagement among media, policy makers, and key elected officials Supports cross-functional research efforts such as polling, surveys, or focus groups that lead to strategic messaging relevant to young people of color Oversees organizational brand strategies, including swag development, for both Power California and PowerCA Action, primarily to position as political homes for young people of color and to build membership Ensures communication of a consistent, relevant and high-quality brand to young people across our platforms, channels, and materials Responsible for writing copy and content - including messaging and talking points, copy for voter guides, campaign materials, scripts (video or field), op eds and press materials Ensures visibility of our work in earned media outlets and among funders, donors and allies Works closely with the Development Team to develop messaging and marketing materials for fundraising campaigns Leads production of campaign materials, voter guides, and related publications for on or offline distribution for both entities Manages production of printed branded materials, collateral, and digital content; coordinates relationship and production timelines with graphic designers, video editors, printers, and other consultants as needed Manages relationships with local and statewide media outlets; develops press materials, op-eds, talking points, and messaging guides Trains and prepares spokespersons, including staff leaders, partner organizations’ representatives, and youth leaders Stays abreast of shifts in media and narrative landscape and pivots approach accordingly Builds the narrative and strategic communications skills and capacities of partner organizations through trainings and structured programming What you bring… Minimum 3 years’ experience working in the field of strategic communications with success in driving and reaching goals, with a minimum 1 year’ supervision experience of managing staff Demonstrated ability at developing effective framing and messaging strategies that move narratives and shape media coverage Exemplary writing and editing skills, with ability to simplify complex information for different audiences Delivers quality work quickly with high level of accuracy and attention to detail 2-3 or more years of experience using strategic communications as a campaign strategy, organizational communications at a nonprofit, preferably related to racial justice issues or youth & electoral organizing Are resourceful and take initiative Ability to assess landscape opportunities and drive strategies to seize opportunities; able to troubleshoot and make course corrections as landscapes shifts while bringing team along Outstanding communication and presentation skills; able to communicate with people from various backgrounds and generational, socioeconomic and cultural identities skills Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects. Excellent time management and organization; works well both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with shifting timelines Experience working/partnering with young people of color, low-income, immigrants and refugees, including and/or LGBTQIA+ communities Ability to consistently act and interact with integrity, compassion and openness to feedback Some evenings and weekends required, primarily during campaign seasons Has cell phone with adequate data plan and home internet connection with adequate speed Bonus points if you’re bilingual or multilingual, have familiarity with grassroots organizing, advocacy and electoral engagement, and/or if you have f amiliarity with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) structures, and PACs This position description intends to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job.
