Justice Advisory Committee Purpose: The FASD United Justice Advisory Committee is charged with addressing issues related to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) within the legal system, aiming to raise awareness among judges, lawyers, and other justice professionals about the challenges individuals with FASD face when interacting with the justice system, and advocating for appropriate accommodations and interventions to be implemented. The Justice Advisory Committee shall also provide advice and recommendations to the Board of Directors and to the staff of FASD United concerning FASD-related justice issues and reform. Type of Committee : Advisory Reports to: FASD United Board of Directors Staff Relationship : The Chief Executive Officer shall provide support staff to the Committee when requested . Committee Composition : The Justice Advisory Committee shall have up to 15 members, including non-Board members, and is chaired by a FASD United Board member and/or their designee . Non-board members shall be recruited to serve by FASD United staff and/or Board members, or other Justice Advisory Committee members and shall be approved by the chairs of the Justice Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors and shall include such professionals as: judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement officers, social workers, probation officers, mental health and other professionals who provide diagnostic or other support to those living with FASD , FASD Experts, and those with living with FASD . ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Focus on awareness E ducates legal and other professionals in the justice system about the characteristics and impacts of FASD, including difficulties with decision-making, impulsivity, and challenges understanding legal proceedings, which can lead to misinterpretations of behavior in court . Provides advice to the board, staff and committees regarding justice related issues. Policy development: D evelops policies and procedures within the justice system that are specifically tailored to individuals with FASD, such as specialized screening tools, alternative sentencing options, and access to appropriate support services and makes recommendations to the FASD United Policy Committee and the Board of Directors. Collaboration with other organizations: C ollaborates with organizations like FASD advocacy groups, mental health providers and social service agencies to ensure comprehensive support for individuals with FASD involved in the legal system. Service on this committee is on a volunteer basis and will be assigned to the committee by referral with approval from the board of directors.
