Ember Search has been retained on a Head of Finance search for a profitable, PE-backed vertical SaaS business and the operating system for specialty dental practices, at scale and growing 30 to 40% annually. The company has spent more than two decades building deep credibility in its niche and is now backed by a top-tier PE firm as it professionalizes operations, launches a major cloud product release, and rolls out an embedded payments solution that is expected to materially expand the monetization model. Customer retention is best in class because end customers in this niche generate strong, durable revenue and almost never go out of business. The business is at a clear inflection point: a defensible vertical software leader transitioning from a long-standing, founder-led operation to a professionally run, scaled SaaS business with real growth catalysts ahead. Location: Remote, with some travel The Role This is a newly created seat and the first ever dedicated Head of Finance in the company's history. You will report directly to the COO and partner closely with the PE sponsor on strategic finance, operating finance, FP&A, and value creation. This is a true 0 to 1 build with full ownership of the finance function and a clear runway to CFO over time. You will: Build the strategic finance, FP&A, and planning function from the ground up, including budgeting, reforecasting, and KPI reporting Own the financial model and management reporting used by the leadership team and the PE sponsor Partner with the COO and executive team on spend, performance, and operating decisions across the business Establish AR, AP, and accounting controls alongside an accounting manager already in place Own cash flow forecasting, working capital management, and revenue and unit economics analysis Lead the financial execution of the embedded payments launch, including revenue treatment and take-rate management Partner with the PE sponsor on board reporting, value creation planning, and exit readiness This is both a strategic and deeply hands-on seat. You will build models and processes yourself while also influencing senior stakeholders on how the business plans, measures, and operates. Candidate Profile 8 to 12+ years of progressive finance experience, with meaningful time in a high-growth operating role Experience in vertical SaaS, healthcare IT, or embedded payments strongly preferred Strong foundation in investment banking, private equity, top-tier consulting, or equivalent analytical training Track record of building FP&A, planning cadence, and operating finance from scratch rather than inheriting existing structure Strong understanding of SaaS economics, retention dynamics, and ideally embedded payments business models Comfortable operating as a true partner to a COO without needing a team underneath you to be effective Top-tier academic background Why This Role You will be the first dedicated finance leader in a profitable, defensible vertical software business at a genuine inflection point. The PE sponsor is engaged and committed, the COO is a real operator, and there is a clear product catalyst on the horizon with the cloud release and embedded payments going live. You will own the entire finance function from day one with no inherited structure to manage around, sit at the senior leadership table as the strategic finance partner to the COO, and have direct exposure to a sophisticated PE sponsor and the full investment lifecycle. There is a clear runway to grow into CFO at the company or across the sponsor's broader software portfolio.
