About the roles Both roles sit within our finance team, which currently consists of the Controller and Senior Financial Analyst and, in collaboration with the COO, oversees over $22M in spending annually. Whether you're earlier in your finance career or bring several years of accounting experience, we're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, organized, and motivated to support the financial operations of an impact-driven organization. The Finance Associate is focused on transactional accuracy and day-to-day bookkeeping — the engine that keeps our financial records current and clean. The Staff Accountant takes on greater ownership of accounting functions, adding analytical depth, oversight responsibilities, process development, and strategic collaboration with the Controller. Both roles are fully remote and open to candidates in the US only who have valid US work authorization. Our finance team works in Sage Intacct as our accounting platform, alongside project management software and other payment/HR management systems. Key Responsibilities Shared across both roles: Recording and reconciling credit card transactions, ensuring all receipts are submitted and charges are correctly coded Supporting month-end close processes to ensure transactions are entered accurately and on time Assisting the finance team in enforcing RP's expense policies Assisting with the annual audit by providing necessary documentation and supporting schedules Maintaining accurate and organized financial records, including W-9s, W-8BENs, invoices, and other supporting documentation Maintaining confidentiality of Rethink Priorities financial records and activity Finance Associate only: Managing day-to-day bookkeeping tasks including recording bills, contractor invoices, and external payment requests in Sage Intacct accurately and in a timely manner Recording US and UK payroll entries and staff expense reimbursements, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded in the general ledger Supporting the finance team with additional bookkeeping and administrative tasks as needed Staff Accountant only: Preparing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations for month-end and year-end close; maintaining supporting schedules and processing assigned journal entries Managing and overseeing day-to-day Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities, ensuring timely vendor and contractor payments and accurate processing of deposits and expense reimbursements Managing RP's credit card platform, including user administration, card creation, and budget monitoring Developing and maintaining spend analysis across departments and grants to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting Serving as a responsive and knowledgeable point of contact for staff finance questions and requests, including payment inquiries, expense coding, and platform access Reviewing and approving staff reimbursement requests including meal per diems Supporting the development and maintenance of cost methodologies, including indirect rates and cost allocation approaches, and assisting with financial forecasting to inform budgeting and grant reporting Collaborating with the Controller and finance team on strategic initiatives and process improvement projects as the organization grows Creating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures for the Finance and Operations team Supporting the organization during periods of substantial org-wide growth and within the Finance department as needed. Skills, Competencies, Knowledge, and Experience S hared across both roles: Highly organized and attentive to detail Comfortable working independently in a fully remote setting Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset Experience with payroll platforms such as Justworks or Remote is a plus Familiarity with Sage Intacct is a plus Finance Associate: 1+ years of relevant bookkeeping or accounting experience, ideally in a nonprofit setting Solid understanding of bookkeeping fundamentals and basic accounting principles Proficient in Excel or Google Sheets Experience with multi-currency transactions or multi-entity structures is preferred Experience with fund tracking is preferred Staff Accountant: 3+ years of relevant experience in bookkeeping and finance, ideally in a nonprofit setting Strong understanding of nonprofit fund accounting and multi-entity accounting Understanding of nonprofit accounting fundamentals, including GAAP compliance; knowledge of IFRS is a plus Advanced knowledge and experience using Excel or Google Sheets Proficient analytical and reporting skills, with the ability to resolve issues and develop new processes when necessary What We Offer Compensation Finance Associate: $55,000-60,000 USD pre-tax (prorated if part-time) Staff Accountant: $70,000-80,000 USD pre-tax Salary offers are determined by RP's internal compensation criteria, and to ensure fairness across the entire organization, we do not negotiate salaries. Travel: Travel at least once a year is a requirement for this position.
