Lyceum College invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced academic professionals to serve as External Moderators across various faculties. Moderators play a critical role in safeguarding academic standards, ensuring fairness, and supporting continuous improvement in assessment practices. External Moderators provide an independent, expert evaluation of assessment instruments and marking processes. They ensure that all assessments meet national and institutional standards, are academically defensible, and accurately measure the intended learning outcomes. Please note that individuals appointed as External Moderators may not simultaneously serve as Module Leaders for the same programme or faculty. Role Overview External Moderators are responsible for the pre- and post-assessment moderation of: · Examination papers · Assignments and other types of assessments including Portfolios of Evidence (POEs) · Marking guides and memos · Marked scripts · Assessment reports Moderators ensure that assessment practices are rigorous, fair, reliable, and aligned with applicable regulatory standards, and discipline-specific expectations. Moderators also provide targeted mentorship and developmental feedback to internal academic staff, including Module Leaders and internal examiners. Post-Assessment Moderation • Moderate samples of marked student work across performance bands. • Verify the accuracy and consistency of marking. • Identify irregularities, inconsistencies, or risks related to academic integrity. • Recommend amendments or remarking where necessary. • Confirm that marks awarded are fair, reliable, and defensible. Academic Mentorship and Quality Enhancement • Provide constructive developmental feedback to internal examiners, Module Leaders, and academic staff. • Support improvements in assessment design, marking quality, and academic standards. • Contribute to continuous improvement through evidence-based recommendations. • Participate in assessment review discussions when required. Reporting and Compliance • Submit formal moderation reports within stipulated timelines. • Highlight risks relating to assessment quality, academic integrity, or curriculum alignment. • Support the College in meeting external quality assurance requirements. Requirements Minimum Requirements • A Master’s degree in Education or the teaching specialisation area (essential). • At least three years’ experience in teaching, teaching education, assessment design, curriculum development, or instructional design in higher education. • Demonstrable experience developing study guides, assessment design, or academic content. • Experience teaching or supervising in distance/online education (advantage). • Demonstrated understanding of South African schooling contexts and curriculum. • Familiarity with applicable regulatory standards, and academic quality assurance frameworks. • Computer literacy with access to a laptop/desktop and reliable internet connection. • Ability to provide independent, impartial, and development-oriented feedback. • Ability to meet deadlines and incorporate revisions where required.
