CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER (CTO) MyFriendBen Location: Denver, CO (Hybrid) or Remote Reports To: Executive Director / CEO Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt ABOUT MYFRIENDBEN MyFriendBen is a nonprofit organization on a mission to empower individuals and organizations to quickly and easily understand and access government benefits, tax credits, and nonprofit programs. Through our free online screening tool, users answer a short set of demographic questions and receive a personalized report showing the benefits they may be eligible for — along with estimated dollar values and next steps to apply. The tool takes just six minutes, is available in 21 languages and supported in 5 states. Originally incubated by Gary Community Ventures, MyFriendBen now operates as an independent nonprofit headquartered in Denver, with active deployments across multiple states. We have identified over $800 million in available benefits for Colorado families alone and continue to scale nationally through an open-source, partnership-driven model. POSITION SUMMARY The Chief Technology Officer will serve as the senior technology leader at MyFriendBen, responsible for setting and executing the organization's technology vision, strategy, and roadmap. This role oversees all aspects of software development, data infrastructure, information security, and technical operations. The CTO will work closely with the Executive Director, program leadership, and state-level partners to ensure the platform meets the evolving needs of the communities we serve. This is a unique opportunity to lead technology at a mission-driven organization whose product directly improves economic mobility for hundreds of thousands of families. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Technology Strategy and Vision - Define and execute a multi-year technology roadmap aligned with MyFriendBen's strategic plan and expansion goals. - Evaluate emerging technologies — including AI, machine learning, and large language models — for potential integration into the benefits-screening platform. - Advise the Executive Director and Board of Directors on technology investments, risks, and opportunities. Product and Platform Development - Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of the MyFriendBen screening tool and supporting applications. - Drive platform scalability to support deployments in new states and languages. - Champion user-centered design practices to ensure the tool remains accessible, intuitive, and equitable for all users, including those with limited digital literacy. Engineering Leadership - Recruit, mentor, and manage a high-performing engineering team (in-house staff and contractors). - Establish and maintain engineering best practices, including code review, testing, CI/CD, and documentation standards. - Foster an open-source development culture and manage community contributions. Data and Analytics - Oversee data architecture, warehousing, and reporting to support program evaluation, impact measurement, and funder reporting. - Ensure data governance policies meet or exceed applicable privacy regulations (e.g., state data-sharing agreements, FERPA, HIPAA where relevant). Security and Compliance - Maintain a robust information-security program, including vulnerability management, incident response, and access controls. - Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting the handling of personally identifiable information (PII) and benefits data. Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement - Serve as the primary technical liaison with state agencies, community-based organizations, and civic-technology partners. - Represent MyFriendBen at conferences, working groups, and public forums related to civic technology and benefits access. QUALIFICATIONS Required - 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior technology leadership role. - Demonstrated success building and scaling web-based platforms or SaaS products. - Deep expertise in modern web application frameworks, cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), and API-driven architectures. - Experience managing engineering teams of 5 or more, including both employees and contractors. - Strong understanding of data privacy, security best practices, and compliance frameworks. - Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders. Preferred - Experience in the nonprofit, government, or civic-technology sector. - Familiarity with public benefits systems, eligibility rules engines, or social-services technology. - Experience with open-source project governance and community management. - Background in multilingual application development or accessibility (WCAG) compliance. - Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
